Rwanda Primate Trail

Mountain gorillas. Golden monkeys. Chimpanzees.

Mountain gorillas. Golden monkeys. Chimpanzees. Rwanda's three great primates in one continuous journey through two of the country's finest national parks.

This is Rwanda's most complete primate itinerary — and one that belongs to Rwanda alone. You begin in Volcanoes National Park for gorillas and golden monkeys, then travel south through Rwanda's green interior to Nyungwe Forest: one of Africa's oldest and largest montane rainforests, home to thirteen primate species, 310 bird species, and habituated chimpanzee groups. The route ends with the Igishigishigi canopy walkway — a 90-metre suspension bridge through the upper forest, offering a perspective on the forest that no ground-level path can match. Three species. Two parks. One country.

Itinerary

Arrival in Kigali. Depending on flight time: optional city orientation — Genocide Memorial, Kimironko market, Nyamirambo neighbourhood. Briefing dinner at the hotel. Early night.

Morning transfer northwest to Musanze and the Volcanoes NP buffer zone. Afternoon at the lodge with the Virunga volcanoes on the horizon. Ranger briefing for the following day's trek. Dinner and early night.

Pre-dawn departure for gorilla trekking. One hour with a habituated family in the rainforest. Return to lodge for lunch. Optional afternoon: golden monkey trekking in the bamboo zone — both great primate experiences in one extraordinary day.

Morning departure south through Rwanda's interior — the land of a thousand hills at its most dramatic. Approximately 4–5 hours to Nyungwe. Check in to the forest-edge lodge. Briefing for the next day's chimpanzee trek.

Early morning chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe — Rwanda's largest protected rainforest and one of Africa's most biodiverse. Habituated groups tracked by experienced rangers. Afternoon: the Igishigishigi canopy walkway — a 90-metre suspension bridge at 50 metres above the forest floor. Extraordinary birdwatching throughout.

Morning transfer north to Kigali, with an option to stop at Lake Kivu viewpoints en route. Arrive afternoon for a final lunch or coffee before your onward flight.
