Amboseli: the vast flat lakebed with Kilimanjaro rising above it — the most recognisable Africa photograph in the world, and one of the continent's finest destinations for large, relaxed elephant herds. Together, they make the definitive Kenya safari. Seven days to experience both properly, with enough time in each park to move past the first sightings and into something deeper.
Domestic flight or road to the Mara. Afternoon game drive. First lions. First wildebeest on the horizon. Camp dinner.
Full day in the Mara's best predator zones — Mara Triangle and Mara North. Lion prides, leopard in the sausage trees, cheetah on the open plain. Mara River drive in the afternoon.
Dedicated day at the Mara River crossing points during migration (Jul–Oct). Outside migration: full-day drive in the northern Mara with a Maasai cultural village visit in the late afternoon.
Morning game drive. Post-lunch transfer southeast across the Rift Valley floor — Kilimanjaro appearing on the horizon as you approach. Late afternoon arrival and first game drive with the mountain as backdrop.
Pre-dawn drive for the clearest mountain views. Large elephant bulls on the swamp margins. Midday break. Afternoon lakebed circuit — the Amboseli elephants are Africa's most studied and relaxed.
Pre-dawn drive for the best Kilimanjaro light — clearest before the cloud builds. Final afternoon in the park. Farewell camp dinner under the stars.
